‘Who’s the Man?’

Target: 15 - 17 years (and parents)

What is a man? What does it mean to be a man?

The answers to these questions are in flux, more so than at any other time in history.  Traditional ideas of the alpha male, the loveable larrikin, and the Aussie bloke are being questioned, deconstructed and rejected by a community that no longer accepts them as a model for today’s young men.

Within this identity crisis is a more visceral crisis: one of the leading causes of death in Australia, amongst men between 12 and 65 years, is suicide.  But problems of suicide, sexual identity, communication and depression are largely ignored amongst men, young and old, all over the world.  How can we encourage men to give voice to these issues, and to find a sense of belonging within a society that is changing so rapidly?  For a detailed look at how these presentations are delivered, please click here.

Who's the Man? is a powerful 2-hr presentation, aiming to challenge some of the often toxic messages young men get about what it means to be a man, and empowering them to think differently about how they see themselves and the roles that they play as young men.  We value highly, participant involvement, with open debates and group discussions whilst exploring the following topics (drawing on real life situations from pop culture and the boys lives themselves):

  • How do men communicate? Is it 'OK' to talk about our feelings? Is it 'OK' for guys to cry?
  • Self Destruction! What happens when we bottle it all up on the inside?
  • Role Models. Who are the men in our own lives that have been a positive influence?
  • The Media. How much pressure is there to look and act a certain way?
  • Taking Risks. What gets us guys into trouble?  How can we look after our mates?
  • Breaking the mould! Living healthy and happy lives beyond the stereotypes.
  • Seeking Help.  How to support our mates & ourselves. Where we go for help.

‘Who’s the Man?’  has become quite popular with schools, run as a Father(or parent/guardian)/Son night.
