'You've got Male!'

Target: Parents & Carers

'You've got Male!' is a 90-minute presentation that explores the often difficult (but rewarding!) path of raising/working with teenage boys.  This presentation is ideal for parents, carers, teachers (and anyone involved in the lives of boys).  This is a presentation of facts on the issues facing 'our boys' in the 21st Century and the strategies we can implement along the way to ensure 'our boys' grow into happy and healthy adult men.

"90% of children with behavioural problems are boys; 80% of children with learning difficulties are also boys; 1 in 7 boys will experience sexual assault by an adult or another child before the age of 18; over 90% of convicted acts of violence will be carried out by men; one of the leading causes of death amongst men between the ages of 12 and 60 is suicide." Topics explored:

  • The Facts: We look at the current statistics on the issues affecting min in Australia, with a focus on boys and young men.  We will look at the personal voice behind the statistics and look at possible reasons as to why these issues are presenting themselves - with possible solutions!
  • The "rules!" Ask any 15-year-old boy on the street and he will tell you that there are very specific rules that go with 'being a man.'  We look at these 'rules' and where they come from, and what happens to those boys who don't follow them.  We also explore just how much of a role the media plays in shaping young people's misconceptions of gender roles.  In this section, we also look at: Developing a health sexuality; Risk taking; Violence; and getting boys to talk about their 'feelings.'
  • Role Models: Looking at the importance of having positive role models for boys - and what boys have said about this.
  • Support! How do we find the best support for 'our boys?'  How can we best help them support themselves? Where can WE find support?

N.B: There is also a 15-minute question time at the end of this presentation.
